Nils-Olav Skeie was involved in system design and development in the computer, aviation and maritime industry for about 20 years before taking a PhD in soft sensors and machine learning. After finishing his PhD education, he started to work at Telemark University College and later at the University of South-Eastern Norway full time. He continued to work in the maritime industry (part-time) for more than 10 years after starting in academia. Nils-Olav Skeie has lectured in system design courses like Industrial IT, sensor technology and instrumentation, soft sensors and software engineering with focus on industrial control systems for the last 15 years, on both BSc. and MSc. levels. His interest are within sensor systems, data fusion, soft sensors, data driven models including machine learning, industrial control systems and software development. He has supervised more than 60 BSc. and MSc. projects and 7 PhD students. He is also the leader of the SMART research group at USN with focus on developing data driven models for smart buildings, smart environment and smart production.
